Vandoorne Joins JOTA for the 2021 World Endurance Championship Season

Stoffel Vandoorne, the popular ex-Formula 1 driver, is set to return to the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2021 as he leads the JOTA Sports  assault on the LMP2 category.

As Vandoorne joins JOTA for the 2021 World Endurance Championship (WEC) Season, he will join Tom Blomqvist and Sean Gelael at the wheel of the JOTA’s Oreca 07. This team of three is also now set to compete at the upcoming Asian Le Mans season. Stoffel Vandoorne will return to the series after making two starts for the SMP Racing LMP1 team previously in 2019. This was in substitute of his former McLaren associate Jenson Button. This set had concluded in a third place finish in the 2019 Le Mans 24 Hours.

As Vandoorne joins JOTA for the 2021 WEC Season, he has recently expressed his excitement to merge this programme together with his Formula E campaign in 2021 leaving him extremely keen to get things underway sooner rather than later. He also expressed his gratitude to be in the WEC with JOTA as he feels that is it such a well-respected and reputable team in an extremely competitive space which is something that ignites his drive and determination to be involved.

Meanwhile we witness Gelael make a change to sports car racing on a full time basis, not long after a lengthy career in the junior single-seater ranks. Within this period he successfully scored two podium finishes and a also a best championship position of fifteenth. He also went on to make three WEC starts for the now non-operational Extreme Speed Motorsports LMP2 squad in 2015.

One of the JOTA co-owners David Clark expressed his excitement to confirm Stoffel, Sean and Tom’s programme for 2021. David along with many others are very much looking forward to the challenge for wins and the LMP2 title as there is no denying that this team is of great expertise. It is set that Gelael will run the entire Asian Le Mans series season which will encompass two sets of four hour races presented on a range of different layouts at Abu Dhabi for almost the entire month of February. Vandoorne will then join Gelael for the first two races and Blomqvist is scheduled to join Gelael on the remaining two races.

JOTA is still currently working on plans to field a two car LMP2 entry, but nonetheless this team is expected to be in for an exciting year ahead.
