COVID-19 – British GT Postponed Again

Following further lockdown details as announced by the Prime Minister, rounds of British GT have been postponed yet again.

This compounds the already postponed dates even further, showing how the impact of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak is affecting the timelines of both indoor and outdoor sporting and motorsport events all around the globe.

The opening (traditionally held at Oulton Park) was due to be held on the 11th of April and had already been pushed back. Now, the next rounds which were due to be on the 16th and 17th of May (at Snetterton), the 6th and 7th of June (at Silverstone) and 20th and 21st of June (at Donington Park) have also been pushed back – with new dates to be announced. The very fact that new dates cannot be announced as of yet show the seriousness that the motorsport world are taking the outbreak and exercising precaution.

Motorsport UK

This comes following the announcement from Motorsport UK who have extended their suspension of all organising permits and Certificates of Exemption until at least the 30th of June 2020. They state that this is ‘the role that Motorsport UK must play in supporting the broader UK public health agenda. In recent days the feedback from our members and the community was a need for increased clarity to allow them to plan appropriately and, should the need arise, put in place necessary contingency measures.’ By announcing that there will be no action until at least the 30th of June 2020, the motorsport community can have a contingent ‘pin’ in their calendar, so to speak.

Likewise Motorsport UK chairman David Richard further explains: “When we reflect back on this time, it will be a brief, but vital, hiatus from our everyday motorsport life and we must put this in perspective. This is a time of national unity and we need to come together with the broader public community to do all we can to support this battle and ultimately save lives.” What is filling the void in the meantime for motorsport fans (and racers) while the likes of the British GT is postponed is the rise of iRacing and Esports in the interim – you can learn more about this online virtual racing here.
