2022 Calendar Confirms Hankook 24H Portimao

After many turbulent months of travel restrictions, lockdowns and many last-minute cancellations across the globe; it brings great excitement to learn that the 2022 Calendar confirms Hankook 24H Portimao.

The Hankook 24H Portimao will now be held in 2022 and will still count towards the 2022 24H Series that is powered by Hankook Championship. Although this event was ready to go ahead in July as the fifth annual edition of the Hankook 24H Portimao; increased travel restrictions that were put in place by the German government in June put a sudden end to this event. Unfortunately, this meant extended quarantine periods in Portugal to fourteen days due to the rapid increase of the covid-19 Delta variant that had recently been detected throughout the country and many other neighbouring countries.

A mutual agreement was made to cancel the 2021 event as most felt that it was now unsafe for competitors to attend a 24H event. After many conversations between Creventic and management at the Autodromo Internacional, all is not lost as it has just been agreed and confirmed that the 24H Portimao will now return next year! As the 2022 calendar confirms Hankook 24H Portimao, this means that the following round of this year’s 24H Series will now be the Hankook 24H Barcelona scheduled to go ahead this September.

According to Ivo Breukers following a recent interview with Midweek Motorsport, this means that the now seven-round 2021 season will finish up with the inaugural Hankook 24H Sebring in November. As the 2022 calendar confirms Hankook 24H Portimao and with the run up to this now well underway, the Hankook 24H Dubai will still open the 24H Series season on time in January next. Following this one week later we will see the Yas Marina Circuit host the Hankook 6H Abu Dhabi for the second consecutive year.

Many German teams were experiencing scheduling problems therefore the fourteen-day quarantine period was proving too unrealistic for many and unfortunately due to so many Delta variant red zones the decision to cancel had to be made. Although this has been a bit of a logistical nightmare, there are now great plans in place for the upcoming events giving the spectators so much to look forward to in the near future.
